Dear Denny Hastert,
I love you, Denny. Let me sit next to you, whisper sweet nothings in your ear. Tickle your elbow, croon to you: "stay, Denny... don't go... don't go... we love you Denny... please, please don't leave."
Why, you may ask, does the GTL love Mr. Tom-DeLay-Lite so much, so suddenly, with so much visceral passion? Why would I want his flaccid face, rotund in the rotunda, looming large for another minute after all he and his party have put the rest of us through?
Why keep this Rovian rottweiller as Speaker of the House a single moment longer?
Here's why.
Don't let those America-hatin' Liberals drag you down, Denny! Without you and your sense of duty and honor, who will protect Republican pedophiles in Congress from the attacks of nubile young page-boys, Democrats, child-welfare advocates, and any other enemy combatants just itchin' for a one-way ticket to Gitmo you might think of over the next few days?
I've said it before and I'll say it again: the Republican mindset is obsessed with sex, with controlling female sexuality, with demonizing good ole healthy lust, and now, it seems, of excusing underage man-boy love - when it's Republican underage man-boy love.

The obsession over Foley is quite revealing...
It would be interesting to see if there would have been a difference to the puglicans if Foley had been flirting with girls instead of boys.
Granted, it's not hard to see the problems with potential abuse of power over minors, especially in sexual ways, but from what I can see here... Foley has not committed any actual crime (that is if you define "crime" as in "illegal" or against any particular legal statute).
It may be fun to watch these guys self-destruct under their own rules. Under their rubrick, thinking is as bad as doing... unless of course it's one of your guys.
Unfortunately, this type of news has a way of taking the public mind away from more important issues... I mean, who really cares if this guy sent an email or two, as long as he's not acting on his perversions, what's the real harm?
I mean, this is getting a heck of a lot more newsplay than the recent destruction of habeus corpus by this congress... nobody seems to care if we're going back to the dark ages, but this prompts a public response of "OH NO, this guy is lusting after young BOYS! whatever shall we do????"
Oddly enough, it will likely have an effect on turnout amongst the religious right in the upcoming elections. I don't think anyone with much of a brain is changing parties over this particular issue; it's voter turnout that guides elections.
So acutally maybe the banal takes over and guides the real after all.
There is a cynical side of me that believes Karl Rove is gleefully rubbing his hands together in anticipation of the Sunday morning sermons this fiasco has inspired. Doesn't it somehow play into the homophobic argument that all gays are pedophiles? And exgrad is right -- it'll probably wind up bolstering voter turnout among conservatives. Nothing like the mention of g-a-y in the news to rile up the starched church crowd.
The most amusing thing I've heard about this scandal has to be the interview of Paul Weyrich on NPR. He claimed that all homosexuals are preoccupied with sex. (He even proclaimed, "It's not my opinion -- it's the opinion of many psychologists and psychiatrists that have to deal with them.")
actually my point was the opposite; I believe that this will actually result in decreased turnout amongst the religious right. This is one of their own; they will definitely not vote Democrat, but will have a hard time supporting what they will likely see as evil in their own party, so most likely will not turn up at the polls next month.
we'll see...
Ahh, I see your point. I think that could be true in his district but I don't know about overall turnout. It seems like any kind of mention of "gay" sends the fundies out to vote in droves. Even within his district, I'd imagine there'd be some effort to try to recoup. This can still play into the religious agenda -- what with sin, forgiveness, etc. because God is just testing their faith.
